Nature and Biodiversity

Nature provides modern-day society with vital resources. Understanding the potential dependencies and impacts for businesses is key to protecting and preserving the balance of our eco-systems. That is why NFU Mutual is committed to helping conserve and enhance nature and biodiversity through our own activities and influence.

Embedding our approach

After defining our nature and biodiversity approach in 2024, our 2025 target was to begin embedding this across the business. Progress has included extending our scope of work with Arup, our specialist partner, to complete a Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) LEAP assessment of NFU Mutual’s occupational property. This confirmed that our estate has a low nature-related risk profile and identified opportunities to enhance biodiversity, strengthen reporting metrics, and integrate findings into our operational risk frameworks.

Additionally, building on the outputs of the biodiversity assessment conducted at our Head Office site in 2024, we have implemented a range of nature-positive enhancements on site, including habitat creation and tree planting. These actions reflect our continued progress towards adopting the TNFD framework and embedding nature-related risk awareness into our business.

In 2025, we also developed a set of guiding principles to steer our strategic approach to nature and biodiversity, ensuring alignment with evolving regulatory expectations, public sentiment, and our Responsible Business Strategy.

These guiding principles have been launched internally as part of voluntary nature and biodiversity training, available to all NFU Mutual employees. The training provides clarity on our approach, as well as helping employees understand themes like nature-related risk, biodiversity loss, natural capital and what nature and biodiversity might mean for both them and NFU Mutual.

Promoting nature and biodiversity across NFU Mutual owned sites

As a commercial landowner, NFU Mutual believes there is an innate responsibility to protect, and where possible enhance, the nature and biodiversity of its owned sites.

Across our Stratford sites, we have 14 hectares of open green space with over 1000 trees of 79 different species. We operate a number of different initiatives to encourage nature and biodiversity and prevent nature loss. These include: wildflower gardens to encourage flying insects; log piles to provide habitats for insects, fungi, mosses and lichens; bird feeding stations and the installation of bat, bird and owl boxes across our sites, as well as bee hotels. We have recently installed signage explaining the benefits of each of these initiatives to help raise awareness and educate staff on what they could do at home.

Our nature-focused community support

Our community support activity provides another opportunity for us to play our part in protecting and enhancing our environment. This is possible through the causes we support, as well as through our employee volunteering scheme.

In 2025, 62% of our total employee volunteering hours were dedicated to supporting local nature and biodiversity initiatives. One such example took place in May 2025, when the HR People Change team volunteered at the Forest of Hearts Nature Reserve in Warwickshire. The team split into smaller groups to undertake a range of activities, including painting wooden gazebos, creating a new pathway through the reserve, supporting the early development of a medicinal garden and carrying out a biodiversity audit in the meadow.
