Waste, Water and Resource Use
At NFU Mutual, we are proud that all of our waste is either reused, recycled or disposed of responsibly. We have partnered with Mitie Ltd, who are working with us to identify and implement initiatives to further increase our recycling rate nationally.

Helping our employees to dispose of IT equipment responsibly
NFU Mutual recently piloted a scheme to help staff across its Stratford-upon-Avon sites to responsibly dispose of personal IT equipment they no longer needed. Having previously worked on a responsible waste process for NFU Mutual’s redundant business IT equipment, our Asset Recovery Team wanted to extend their services to offer staff a safe, convenient way to dispose of their personal devices too. A huge percentage of a device’s carbon footprint is created at the manufacturing stage, around 85% for a laptop and 90% for a mobile phone, so recycling a device can make a massive difference for the environment. To encourage uptake, we also offered a sustainable thank you gift to employees taking part.
Recycling to Improve Lives
We’ve been donating furniture we no longer need for over a decade, giving items a second life with local organisations that need them. We donate our surplus office furniture to local groups such as community centres, schools and hospices, allowing them to update key spaces and redirect funding to where it matters most – delivering the valuable services and support they offer our communities.

Water usage
In 2023, we completed a tender to consolidate our water supplies across our Group occupied office estate. As part of this, we upgraded our water meters to allow us to track our usage. Now that we have accurate measurements in place, we intend to use our 2024 water usage as a baseline year to target savings in the future.
